The rumble of the engines and the unmistakable scent of pine needles filling our lungs – that’s our signal that we’ve truly immersed ourselves in nature. For my husband and me, hitting the trails aboard our ATVs transcends just being a leisure activity. It’s a lifeline connecting us to the great PEI outdoors, despite the physical challenges which come with injury, illness, and aging.
A few years ago, my husband was diagnosed with conditions which made long hikes nearly impossible for him. The uneven terrain and rocky paths became too difficult to navigate safely. We worried our days of exploring the island’s wilderness were numbered, until we discovered the world of ATVing.
Riding alongside my husband behind the wheel of our sturdy side-by-side, those beautiful PEI trails were opened up to us once again. We could conquer rugged paths, climb hills, and venture deep into the island’s secluded beauty spots, all from our cozy saddles. The wind in our hair, I’d close my eyes and drink in the crisp, maritime air, feeling more alive and invigorated than we had in years.
But the true highlight was the incredible community we joined. Our ATV crew quickly became an extended family, a tight-knit group of kindred nature lovers. We’d break new trails together, pause to admire nature’s changing seasons, and share stories over picnic lunches in secluded woodland glades or vistas overlooking the strait to NS. On those rides, any perceived limitations melted away, replaced by an unshakable sense of freedom and belonging.
These days, you’ll find us out on the trails nearly every weekend we’re able. Rain or shine, spring blossoms or autumn leaves crunching underfoot, we’re embracing life. With our ATVs, the great PEI outdoors has become our playground once again – a wellness tonic which rejuvenates mind, body, and soul. We drink in the sights, the sounds, the earthy aromas…those precious pieces of heaven which can only be experienced off the beaten path.
This land, these trails, they’re more than just recreation for us. They’re a connection to the very essence of Prince Edward Island, a way to truly inhabit the natural spaces that shape our island home. So lace up those boots and join us, friends. The trails are beckoning, and we were born to heed their call. Like a breath of fresh, invigorating island air, ATVing has revitalized our spirit of adventure. We’re ready to ride our way to wellness – who’s coming along for the journey?
